FAQs

1. What actually decides how a painted wall looks?

Preparation, overwhelmingly. Filling, sanding, priming and a properly cured surface decide the finish far more than the grade of paint applied over them. A good product on a poor surface looks worse than a modest product on a well prepared one.

2. Do I need a primer before painting?

On new plaster and on bare or repaired surfaces, yes. Primer seals an absorbent surface so the finish coat sits on top rather than soaking in, which is what gives even colour and stated coverage. Skipping it costs more in finish paint than the primer would have.

3. How much paint will a room take?

Work from the coverage figure on the product against your measured area, remembering that coverage assumes a primed, level surface. Rough or absorbent plaster consumes considerably more. Measure the walls rather than estimating from room size, and allow for a second coat.

4. What is a base and do I need it tinted?

A base is the uncoloured product that a tinting machine turns into your chosen shade. Buying a base expecting a finished colour is a common and expensive mistake. Confirm whether you are ordering a ready shade or a base that still needs machine tinting.

5. Can I paint over damp plaster?

No. Coating over plaster that has not fully cured and dried traps moisture behind the film, and blistering and peeling follow regardless of paint quality. New plaster needs a proper drying period, and rushing that stage is one of the commonest causes of paint failure.

6. Will shade vary between tins?

Subtly, between production batches. It is invisible on its own and visible where two batches meet along one wall in daylight. Buy the whole requirement together and box the tins into a single container before starting so the mix is consistent throughout the job.

7. Interior or exterior paint - can I use one for both?

Exterior products are formulated for UV, rain and temperature movement, and interior products are not. Using interior paint outside fails quickly. Using exterior paint inside is possible but usually unnecessary and more expensive than the job requires.

Professional tips

Buy the whole requirement in one batch and box it together before starting. Shade varies subtly between production batches, and a join halfway along a long wall is visible in daylight.
