Question 1

What is the difference between an S-trap and a P-trap?

Accepted Answer

An S-trap discharges downwards into the floor slab; a P-trap discharges horizontally into the wall. Which one you need is decided by the plumbing already in the building rather than by preference. Fitting the wrong type means re-routing the drain line, which is real work.

Question 2

What does the number after the trap letter mean?

Accepted Answer

It is the rough-in: the distance in millimetres from the finished wall face to the centre of the outlet. Get it wrong and the pan will not sit against the wall, leaving a visible gap. Measure from the finished wall, not from bare masonry, before ordering.

Question 3

Will it fit my bathroom?

Accepted Answer

Measure from the finished wall face outward and allow clear space in front for use, commonly five hundred millimetres or more. Something that physically fits can still make a room awkward once the door swing crosses that space, so check it on the plan rather than with a tape alone.

Question 4

Is a one-piece better than a two-piece?

Accepted Answer

It costs more and is heavier to handle, but there is no joint between cistern and pan to seep and no gap behind to clean around. Against that, if the cistern cracks you replace the whole unit rather than a single part, which is the trade-off.

Question 5

Does a seat cover come with it?

Accepted Answer

Where the source listing does not state that a seat is included, treat it as a separate item unless the invoice says otherwise. Seats are sold by shape and fixing centres, so match one to the specific pan shape rather than picking a generic size and hoping.

Question 6

What is washdown flushing?

Accepted Answer

Water enters through the rim and pushes waste out by flow rather than by siphonic suction. Washdown pans are the common type in India, use less water per flush than older siphonic designs and cope better with low pressure. They can be marginally noisier in use.

Question 7

Will the white match my existing basin?

Accepted Answer

Only within the same brand and colour name. Ceramic whites differ between ranges and manufacturers, and two near-matching whites side by side in a bright bathroom look like a mistake. Order the pan and basin together from one range wherever you can.
