FAQs

1. Why do electricians insist on a separate earth?

Because the earth conductor is what carries fault current safely away and lets a protective device trip. A circuit without a properly sized and continuous earth can leave metalwork live during a fault, which is the situation the whole installation is designed to prevent.

2. What causes a wire to overheat in service?

Almost always undersizing or a loose termination rather than a defect in the cable. A conductor carrying more than it was sized for, or a screw that was never fully tightened, generates heat that eventually damages insulation and the accessory it is connected to.

3. What size wire does a lighting circuit need?

One square millimetre is standard for lighting and fan points on most Indian domestic wiring. Anything drawing real current, such as a fridge, microwave, geyser or air conditioner, needs a heavier conductor on its own circuit. Have your electrician size each circuit individually.

4. What does FR mean on a wire?

Flame retardant. The PVC compound is formulated to resist catching and to slow flame spreading along the cable if a fault heats it. It is not fireproof, and it is not the same as FRLS, which additionally limits smoke. Check which grade the specification requires.

5. How much wire will my flat need?

It depends entirely on conduit routing and the number of points. The wire inside a wall is always more than the straight-line distance, because drops to switch boards, loops at junctions and slack at the board all add up. Have the conduit run measured before buying.

6. Does the insulation colour actually matter?

It matters a great deal. Convention runs red, yellow or blue for phase, black for neutral and green for earth. Anyone who opens that board later reads the colours to know what is live. Wiring a neutral in a phase colour is dangerous and confuses every future repair.

7. Copper or aluminium - is copper worth the extra?

For house wiring inside conduit, copper is the default. It carries more current for a given cross-section and does not creep at terminations the way aluminium can, which is the failure that loosens a connection and heats it. Aluminium belongs on service cables, not lighting circuits.

Why buy from MOB

Sites need the CargoTech Plain Wire Basket Cabinet 450 on the day, not the week. Stocked lines move on Qwik within 1 to 4 hours where the service runs, code 9156381 stays on the invoice for reorders, and larger schedules can be priced together through RFQ with GST invoicing.

Professional tips

Never join wire inside a conduit. If a coil runs short, take the joint into a junction box where it can be reached, because a buried joint is the fault you will chase with a megger three years on.
