You should not assume so. Exposed parts are engineered to a specific body's spindle, spacing and wall depth, and even within one manufacturer ranges differ. Check with the supplier before ordering rather than after the tiles are up and the wall is closed.

How deep can the finished wall sit from a concealed body?

Every concealed body has a stated depth range marked on it, within which the exposed parts will reach and seat properly. Tile plus adhesive plus levelling bed can easily add twenty millimetres beyond what was assumed at first fix, so check before ordering.

Will it work on a gravity-fed overhead tank without a pump?

Where no minimum pressure is stated, ask before committing. As a rule a rain shower fed from a low overhead tank with a metre or two of head will underperform whatever the fitting. If the tank sits low relative to the bathroom, a pressure pump is usually part of the answer.

Chrome handles hard water better than most finishes, but scale still deposits on any surface. Wiping the fitting dry after use is what actually prevents the white crust. Acid-based bathroom cleaners and scouring pads etch plating, and that damage does not come back out.

The plumber, at second fix. The tiler's job is to leave a clean opening at the right depth around any concealed body. An oversized tile cut may not be covered by the flange and an undersized one stops it sitting flat, so the two trades have to be coordinated.
