Buy Cement and Steel Online: How to Order the Right Grade, Quantity and Delivery

24 September 202611 min readProducts & Materials
Site engineer checking cement bags and TMT bars before ordering cement and steel online

A site message says, 'Send 100 bags cement and 2 tonnes steel.' It sounds complete until someone asks which cement, which steel grade, which bar diameters, and whether the site can unload two tonnes this afternoon. The problem is not buying online. It is squeezing a structural requirement into eight words.

Loading calculator...

Cement is bought in bags but consumed across specific work stages. Steel is discussed in tonnes, but a site needs a diameter-wise bar schedule. Both carry storage and receiving risks.

MOB, aconstruction materials appserving Bengaluru and Mumbai since 2021, delivers cement and TMT steel in 1–4 hours on serviceable pincodes. This guide explains how to buy cement and steel online the right way, with the checks to make before anyone presses order.

Cement and Steel: What to Confirm Before Buying Online

ItemCheck before orderingWhat a vague request misses
CementType and grade, brand rule, number of 50 kg bags, pack size, work stage'Send 100 cement bags'
TMT steelGrade (e.g. Fe 500D), diameter-wise quantities, supply unit'Send 2 tonnes of steel'
RMCGrade, volume, pour date, access for transit mixer and pump'Send concrete tomorrow'
DeliverySite address, unloading access, receiver'Send to the site'
TimingRequired-on-site date, dry and secure storage'Send everything now'
ReceiptCount or weight, markings, condition'The truck came, start work'

Structural specifications and quantities must come from the approved drawings, engineer and BOQ. This is a procurement checklist, not a mix design or reinforcement calculation.

Cement: The Bag Count Is the Last Number, Not the First

A whole-house estimate helps with budgeting, but a site buys cement for the next work stage. Footings, columns, slabs, masonry and plaster rarely happen together or use identical specifications.

Take the approved quantity for the upcoming work, subtract usable stock and decide how much you can keep dry. Our guide to thecement required for a 1000 sq ft houseexplains why a whole-house estimate is not a purchase order.

Cement Type and Grade Must Follow the Approved Work

OPC 43, OPC 53 and PPC have different properties and uses. In India, OPC is covered by IS 269 and fly-ash-based PPC by IS 1489 (Part 1). Buy what the specification calls for; a higher grade is not permission to change the mix, and a cheaper bag is not automatically a valid substitute. For background, readOPC 43 vs OPC 53 vs PPC cement.

When you shop thecementcategory online, check the exact product, type, bag weight and whether the listing is a single bag or a multi-bag pack; some cement is sold only in 50-bag multiples.

Steel: 'Two Tonnes' Is Not a Bar Schedule

A beam is not built from a generic tonne of steel. It needs the diameters, grade, quantities and lengths in the approved bar bending schedule. The total weight can be right while the mix of bars is wrong.

Break the requirement down by diameter and grade before asking for a quote. TMT bars in India are made to IS 1786, and grade is not a 'bigger is better' choice; seeFe 500 vs Fe 500D vs Fe 550D. The structural engineer's schedule remains the authority.

Steel requestWhy it falls shortWhat the buyer needs

TMT Steel Weight per Metre: Quick Chart

To convert a bar schedule into tonnes, or tonnes into bars, use the standard formula: weight in kg per metre = d² ÷ 162, where d is the bar diameter in mm. TMT bars are commonly supplied in 12 m lengths; confirm the length with your supplier.

Actual weights vary slightly within permitted tolerances, so reconcile deliveries by both bar count and invoice or weighbridge weight.

Cement and Steel Brands on MOB

MOB lists cement from brands including UltraTech, ACC, Ambuja, JK Cement, JSW, Shree, Ramco and Dalmia Bharat, plus RMC and sand and aggregates. TMT bars include JSW Neosteel, Jindal, Kamdhenu, Shyam Steel and Prime Gold. Availability varies by product and pincode.

You canbuy building materials onlineon MOB by brand and grade, or photograph the engineer's list and let Magic Quote match it to products.

When Ready-Mix Concrete Changes the Order

For a slab or large continuous pour, RMC can replace a big cement, sand and aggregate order. The risk moves from mixing to logistics: plant slot, transit time, vehicle access, pumping and a crew ready to place and compact. Ourready-mix vs site-mix comparisoncovers the trade-offs.

If you orderRMConline, confirm grade, volume, pour date, pump requirement and site access before payment. MOB confirms RMC delivery slots only after a site access check.

Compare Quotes on the Same Material and Delivery Basis

For cement, compare the same type, 50 kg unit, quantity, GST and freight. For steel, compare the same grade, diameter-wise quantities, supply unit and delivery terms. If a quote changes the specification, mark it as an alternative rather than a cheaper price.

Project quantities deserve anRFQ for bulk cement and steel. Attach the approved schedule, say whether equivalents are allowed, and ask for a staged plan. MOB plans bulk orders as just-in-time, next-day deliveries.

How to Store Cement and Steel on Site

Store cement on a raised, dry platform, away from walls, covered against moisture, in stacks commonly kept to no more than 10 bags high. Use older bags first, check the packing week and year on each bag, and do not use lumpy or hardened cement.

Keep TMT bars off the ground on supports, covered from rain, and bundled by diameter and grade so the right bar reaches the right member. Plan the unloading area and vehicle access before a large load arrives.

What to Check When Cement and Steel Arrive

For cement, count bags and check brand, type, grade, packing date and condition; set aside torn, wet or lumpy bags. For steel, check grade and diameter markings, brand, and bar count or weight against the invoice.

Flag any mismatch before material joins existing stock. MOB is your single point of contact for returns and exchanges, and every order comes with a GST invoice.

Ordering Cement and Steel in Bengaluru and Mumbai

The checklist applies everywhere, but each city adds its own practical constraints.

Order by Construction Stage, Then Reconcile

One stage needs cement and reinforcement together; another needs cement for masonry but no new steel. Split the project into work windows and order against the latest schedule. Ourhouse construction cost guideshows where these materials sit in the overall budget.

After each stage, compare ordered, delivered and consumed quantities. If the gap is large, find out why before increasing the next order: a design change, a measuring error, damage or a weak original estimate.

What to verify on the bag or box

  • Keep the whole-project cement estimate separate from the next delivery quantity.
  • Check whether a cement listing is per bag or a multi-bag pack.
  • Never order reinforcement from a total-tonnage message alone.
  • Use d² ÷ 162 to convert bar lengths into kilograms.
  • Attach the latest bar schedule to any steel RFQ.
  • Confirm access for trucks, transit mixers and pumps before large orders.
  • Use cement first-in, first-out and check packing dates.
  • Investigate repeated overruns instead of simply ordering more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy cement and steel online for a construction site?

Yes. On MOB you can order cement and TMT steel online in Bengaluru and Mumbai, with 1–4 hour delivery on serviceable pincodes. Confirm cement type, steel grade and diameter-wise quantities first.

How do I order cement online in Bangalore?

Open the MOB app, set your site pincode, choose the specified brand, type and grade, check the pack size, enter the number of 50 kg bags and confirm delivery details. MOB serves 116+ Bengaluru localities.

What is the weight of TMT steel per metre?

Use d² ÷ 162 kg per metre, where d is the diameter in mm: about 0.395 kg/m for 8 mm, 0.889 kg/m for 12 mm and 1.58 kg/m for 16 mm.

How many 12 mm TMT bars are in one tonne?

A 12 m long 12 mm bar weighs about 10.67 kg, so one tonne has roughly 94 bars. Confirm the supplied length and reconcile by weight.

Is total steel weight enough to place a TMT order?

No. A total weight does not show diameters or grade. Use the approved bar bending schedule to prepare a diameter-wise order.

Should I buy all the cement for a house at once?

Usually not. Order by work stage, confirmed consumption and dry storage; cement kept too long or in damp conditions can lose quality.

Can I replace the specified cement or steel with a cheaper product?

Only if the responsible engineer approves an alternative that meets the specification. Never change structural materials based on price or a similar name.

Can I order ready-mix concrete online?

In some cities, yes. Confirm grade, volume, pour date, pumping and transit-mixer access before paying. MOB lists RMC for eligible locations and confirms slots after a site access check.
