The CPVC vs UPVC pipes decision becomes simple when one supply line may carry hot water: choose CPVC. Quality CPVC systems are made for pressurised hot-and-cold distribution and commonly serve geysers, showers and kitchen hot lines. UPVC is a strong, economical choice for its approved cold-water, pressure, casing, drainage or rainwater application—but 'UPVC' on a quotation is not enough. What CPVC Is Good At

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride has greater temperature capability than ordinary rigid PVC systems. What UPVC Is Good At

Unplasticised PVC is rigid, economical and widely used in cold-water pressure piping, borewell and casing applications, agriculture, drainage and rainwater systems—depending on the product range. It is not one universal pipe. The printed standard, pressure class and intended application tell you whether a length belongs on a cold-water supply or in an SWR stack.

For a cold-only line, a suitable UPVC pressure system can save money without sacrificing the required performance. For soil and waste, use the manufacturer's designated SWR pipe and fittings with the correct ring-fit or solvent-fit system. Never run geyser discharge through a generic UPVC line merely because the plumber has an unused bundle on site.

Pressure Class and Pipe Size Still Matter

Material selection does not replace hydraulic design. A CPVC pipe can be wrong if it is undersized, too thin for the working pressure or badly supported. Likewise, a correctly selected UPVC pressure pipe can work reliably on a cold line. Account for pump head, static height, simultaneous fixtures, temperature derating and surge instead of copying the sizes from the plumber's last house.

Why the Joint Is Usually the Weakest Part

Most concealed leaks are not a pipe material debate; they are a workmanship story. Dry-fitting without solvent, using too little or incompatible solvent, twisting after initial set, forcing misaligned pipes and testing too early can all create joints that look fine until pressure and temperature cycle through them. Use the exact installation instructions for the chosen system.

Complete a hydrostatic pressure test before plaster, tile or ceiling work hides the route. Keep hot lines away from direct contact with sharp masonry edges, provide sleeves at crossings and allow for thermal movement as the manufacturer recommends.
